Salt Spring Island - Hang Gliding and Camping in the Gulf Islands!

She Said – I love the Gulf Islands and have always wanted to go to Salt Spring Island. We took the Ferry from Swartz Bay in Sydney over to Fulford Harbour on the island to meet up with Steve from Hang Glide Vancouver Island. Steve took us to the top of the island where I got to Hang Glide for the first time in my life. Another experience of something I have always wanted to try. I love this Get Your Ass Out There work – I am getting to try things I have always wanted to. Steve was top notch and tandem flew me down – even got to do some tricks which gave some fun free fall. Google Steve Vancouver Island Hang Glide and give him a call – it is SOOO worth it. What a fun time. Mike went next…. Then we headed to Ganges to go see the TreeHouse Café. My friends Mark and Treena own the café and we wanted to go have lunch there. Unfortunately they were out of town. We had a great great lunch then walked around the Ganges town looking for shops to sell. No luck…but we did have luck finding the best campground I have ever stayed at in my entire life. Ruckle Park has tent sights on dried grass on the ocean and it is stunning. We watched the moon come up, chilled out for the first time on the trip and slept in for the first time too. It was heaven and I will be going back to stay longer. I highly recommend it. I also recommend a dip in St. Mary’s lake. We pulled off on the side of the road and jumped in to the warmest water in a beautiful lake. A quick swim as we had to catch the 1pm ferry back to the mainland so we could drive up to Port Hardy. A long drive, but a beautiful one we stopped for a couple pics (see facebook) and camped the night just outside the ferry.

He Said – We caught the Ferry over to Salt Spring Island by the skin of our teeth (fourth last car). Offloading on the other side to the beautiful island we met up with Steve and his nephew Jesse. We jumped in their truck to take us up to the top of the mountain where our take off for hang gliding was. Andrea went first and it looked awesome to just watch them run off the ramp and float there. I waited at the top of the hill, had a snooze, did a walk around for an hour until the truck pulled back up again and it was my turn. Steve preps you, walks you through what you gotta do and other than that it is pretty easy. We did our prep, got on the ramp, stood tall, looked forward, step step run run run run run and we were off…. It was awesome. You just gliding, and what a view, that is definitely a way to see the area. Steve lets you take over the controls, which is basically pull forward, push out, lean to the side, lean to the side, and then he takes you for a few whoop de whoops. The landing was pretty unique as well. One would figure you land on your feet running in the field, but you come down fairly fast and basically belly slide with the wheels catching on the field ground. Then you are just down, pretty smooth, one of the easiest things I have done in a long time. Steve has an awesome job, love it. The boys drove us back to our truck and we drove up to Ganges to have lunch at Andrea’s friends place, the TreeHouse Café. During the summer they have live music every night, very cool little joint. Jesse had told us about a cool campground in Ruckle Park, so we headed down there to find a spot and set up camp early for the night. It was a gorgeous site – all open overlooking the water with trees spotted here and there and all the tent sites were tall grass. It was perfect…. I just got a semi again. Once set up we decided lets just hang out here, so we cooked ourselves some dinner and just laid low for the night. It was good, real good. The next morning before we caught the ferry we drove up to St. Mary’s Lake to take a dip, aka shower for the day! We found a nice little rock outcrop, it was perfect for diving into the water which was warm and supple across my naked skin, I felt titillated. We then caught the ferry back to Vancouver Island to start on our last leg of our little adventure journey of nakedness and getting your ass out there. Peace Out Homies!
