We started out Friday night setting up our retail booth across from Jennifer, Lawrence and Henry - three amazing people that made our weekend great. The night was a little slow but we were kept busy wiping dust off our booths as the wind gust kept blowing up billows of dirt! Even the dirt didn't phase me too much as we met tons of people in from Idaho, California, Montana, Vancouver, etc. People had driven miles to come for the weekend and they wouldnt be disappointed. The weather was excellent and the rodeo events even better.
Although we were tied to our booth most of the time we did venture out to catch some events like Wild Drag - where three people wrestle a steer - but one is in Drag and that person has to jump on the steer and ride it across the line. The costumes were outrageous.
Then there was goat dressing. Sadly I missed this but it involved putting underwear on a goat.
And...speaking of underwear. Mike was very popular and to increase sales and have a little fun Mike (plus to cool off) Mike decided to wear some of our Get Your Ass Out There Underwear with his cowboy boots and cowboy hat. He became known as underwear boy and was a hit among many. Poor Mikey took a lot of abuse (although it was good natured and fun) - but many wanted to see the "front" in a calendar and not just the back and hence asked him so in person. He politely declined but did offer up a couple of rearside photos!
Among the other wicked people we met were the Priape boys and the Jarro Blue boys and not to mention our drag queen friend Tony who is great because he doesn't care what anyone thinks of him - as such he gaves us quite a bit of info on his lovely Saturday night.
Speaking of Saturday night now - in the spirit of the rodeo we decided to have a couple bevies as we sold calendars - so we were feeling good Saturday evening... then we went to set up the tent. (Mike and I decided to stay the night). I have never had such a funny experience setting up a tent. The girls (one straight, one lesbian) did the trick because the boys (one straight, one gay) were not able to help much because as Mike tried to work with the pole someone was thinking of his - our fine New Zealand friend David had mounted Mike and made it quite difficult for Mike to do much more than defend himself. I wish I had the whole experience on video!
We headed over to the dance and to have dinner at the barn. What a wild fun party. A mix of cowboy tunes, techno and your favs all wrapped up into a barn party with drag queens, and cowboys and girls of all sexual preference. What I loved about it was no one was judging or caring what others thought - everyone was amazing and there to have a good time...and a good time we had. I think my favourite was when the boys would 2 step by and get angry if people were on the dance floor so they would body check them out of the way so they could continue on their merry two step way - hillarious. A close second was a little Gloria Estefan rendition by one of the Queens.
We called it a night fairly early (my doing) but really didnt sleep as the campground erupted into a massive party... I lay their laughing at what surrounded us and thinking about how great our experience was.
The next morning with the wicked wind our tent blew away. I found it litteraly mounting another tent with a fellow inside. After apologizing profusely he laughed and said only at a gay rodeo would a tent mount another! I should have taken a photo but I wanted to save him....
Sunday was a lot quieter but we made some great contacts and more friends. I met a gal from Compassionately Kneaded - a portable massage trailer that she won on a reality show. We traded a calendar for a massage and it was meant to be.... she happens to be a twin also and born less than 24 hours before me....weird. We discussed an opportunity to make a Big Rock Eddie commercial together...
Sunday ended with us departing burnt out with some amazing stories and great new friends. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.
